Origin of the Festival
Mother's Day originated in the United States and is a festival to commemorate mothers. The initiator is Anna Jarvis.
Anna Jarvis' mother, Ann Jarvis, was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers during the American Civil War and created Mother's Day Job Clubs to address public health issues. Ann Jarvis and fellow peace activist and feminist Julia Ward Howe have been urging a "Mother's Day of Peace."
After Anna Jarvis's mother's death, Anna Jarvis organized memorial activities for her mother, and she wanted to set up a day dedicated to remembering all mothers and encourage others to similarly express their gratitude to their loving mothers. Anna Jarvis' appeal has many supporters.
In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, a national holiday in honor of mothers in the United States. This move caused countries all over the world to follow suit. Until the death of Anna Jarvis in 1948, 43 countries had established Mother's Day.
Nowadays, more countries have established Mother's Day. Although each country has a different date, Mother's Day has been deeply rooted in people's hearts.
