Thomas Edison creates the world's first electric light bulb. The strings were outside his Menlo Park laboratory during the Christmas season of 1880. Railroad passengers passing the laboratory saw the light displays for the first time. But electronic Christmas lights took almost four decades to become the tradition we all know and love. Edward H. Johnson strung together the first Christmas tree lights in 1882. Edison's friend and partner in the Edison Lighting Company, Johnson, hand-wired 80 red, white, and blue bulbs and wound them around his Christmas tree. Not only is the tree illuminated by electricity, but it is also spinning. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge lit the National Christmas Tree with 3,000 electric lights on the Ellipse south of the White House, kicking off the nation's Christmas celebrations.
